Enjoyed this more than any other viewing. It's true David Niven is grumpy throughout, but Cary Grant is wonderfully scene-stealing knowing everybody's first name. It's about Niven's loss of faith, but really it's about the fact that he's forgotten to be a husband to Loretta Young, and in fact Grant's falling for her with shades of Wings of Desire (is this where the idea for that film came from?)
Neat special effects and Gregg Toland's deep focus photography is blinding. Great score by Hugo Friedhofer, script by Robert E. Sherwood and Leonardo Bercovici, produced by Sam Goldwyn. Edited by Monica Collingwood.
With Monty Wooley, James Gleason, Gladys George, Elsa Lanchester, Sara Haden, Karolyn Grimes, Tito Vuolo and the kid from It's a Wonderful Life Robert (Bobby) J. Anderson.
Look! A rare bit of shallow focus! |
