Play Dirty (2025 Shane Black & co-scr)

So, Shane Black's new film only rates 5/9 / 10. (At the time of jotting.) Let's have some fun trying to predict what those negative comments are.

"It's a bubble gum movie."

"There's too much unbelievable stuff and CGI."

"This is an offense to Donald Westlake, serious author of 'The Hunter' (filmed as Point Blank), The Outfit, The Hot Rock etc."

"It's too easy to guess the ending."

"Mark Wahlberg and Rosa Salazar don't get it on."

"LaKeith Stanfield is wasted."

Well we thoroughly enjoyed it, being in a certain mood, from the opening - robber tries to rob bank robbery, ends up causing chaos in a horse race, followed by a properly pulp novel inspired sixties title scene (courtesy Skyfall's Danny Kleinman) with great music from Alan Silvestri.

Has some very funny moments throughout. Plots involves theft of a huge and repellent Spanish figurehead.

With Keegan Michael-Key, Chaii Hansen, Chukwudi Iwuji, Nat Wolff, Gretchen Mol, Thomas Jane, Tony Shaloub, Hemky Madera, Alejandro Edda, Claire Lovering.

Photographed by Phillippe Rousselot, edited by Chris Lebenzon and Joel Negron.

Actually, not that many of my guesses were right. Here are some excerpts from the user reviews: Abysmal writing and terrible acting, miscast, mindless, atrociously edited, boring, a stinker, food-processor script, absolute trash, all AI (which I take it now means 'CGI'). And I know I shouldn't make assumptions, but I can't help feeling that these remarks were written by young people, young people who think that anything out of the Marvel Universe is amazing.

An Amazon / MGM production.
