Is it a black comedy? I hope so. When Michael Douglas snaps, the targets of his wrath tend to be people who deserve it in some way. Also, I found it strangely similar to The Swimmer - a man with some latent psychological problem just trying to get home, a home that isn't his.
Robert Duvall is the sympathetic cop who gets on the case despite it being his last day on the force. His colleagues seem largely a bunch of bastards.
It is also a commentary on contemporary America. The screenplay is by Ebbe Roe Smith, mainly a bit part actor.
The opening is a wonderfully edited sequence, Paul Hirsch. Photographed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. Great sound design too, Charles Campbell e.g. the sound of the dodgy fridge in the convenience store.
With Barbara Hershey, Rachel Ticotin, Tuesday Weld, Frederic Forrest (Nazi), Lois Smith.
