Dark City (1950 William Dieterle)

Meaningless title. Bitter ex-army hustler Charlton Heston inveigles out-of-town schmuck into bent card game with cronies Ed Begley and Jack Webb. Poor guy kills himself over losing not his own money - psychopathic brother comes for vengeance.

Yeah - odd sort of story - John Meredyth Lucas, Lawrence Marcus, produced by Hal Wallis (thus proving he didn't always have the gold touch) at Paramount. With Lizabeth Scott (unfortunately not in femme fatale role, but presumably singing her own songs), Viveca Lindfors, Harry Morgan, Dean Jagger. Mike Mazurki, Don DeFore.

Not bad. Photographed by Victor Milner, music by Franz Waxman. Loved it when Heston shouts at phone "Stop ringing!"
