The Nest (2020 Sean Durkin & scr)

Sean's film is sometimes described as a paranormal / horror film, but it isn't at all - the two vaguely paranormal things that happen can be easily explained. No, it's about the disintegration of a family in the eighties following the English father's move back to England with American wife and children. The trouble sets in immediately as the house he has rented is a monstrously large and oppressive Elizabethan mansion miles from anywhere where the kids have no chance of making friends.

Sean's style keeps things in single scenes without cutting, and gradually tracking in or out as the mood takes him, delivering the same sort of slow, hypnotic power we're used to from Southcliffe. His DP is Mátyás Erdély and the editor is Matthew Hunnam.

The family are Jude Law, Carrie Coon, Oona Roche and Charlie Shotwell. With Michael Culkin and Adeel Akhtar.

Loved the exchange with the taxi driver and Law, who tells him he's a liar and broke - so the driver kicks him out!

The house is Nether Wichendon House in Buckinghamshire, but some of the film was shot in Canada.

Liked Richard Reed Parry's jazzy score.

No idea why the film thanks 'The Leonard Nimoy Estate'.
