Inspector Morse: The Remorseful Day (2000 Jack Gold)

Clearly, based on Dexter's final 1999 novel, written by Stephen Churchett, who wrote six episodes of Marple and five of Lewis and is an Eastenders regular (as an actor!) Dexter is part of a group of sightseers.

Lewis is back. Murders link to an old unsolved case involving a lady with whom Morse was connected. He's not looking at all well, in fact is two months away from retiring (we can't really picture him as a bird-watcher).

'How clear, how lovely bright' (A.E. Housman) - which provides the episode's title - was also quoted by  Endeavour in 'Neverland' (series two). It's nice that Morse has left Lewis some of his estate but seems an oversight he wouldn't have bequeathed something to his half-sister?

It is undeniably a melancholy episode. Morse's last words 'Thank Lewis for me' and the latter kissing his forehead are unarguably lovely (and both from the novel).
