Ulee's Gold (1997 Victor Nunez, & scr, cam op, ed)

Yes, very much a one man show. Quiet withdrawn bee-keeper is pulled back into criminal life of son, and has to rescue his drugged up daughter-in-law Christine Dunford, who's like a wild animal. Great cast of unknowns - Patricia Richardson, Tom Wood, Jessica Biel, Vanessa Zima (the sad youngest daughter), Steven Flynn, Dewey Weber. J. Kenneth Campbell (sheriff). Oscar nominated Peter Fonda plays the bee-keeper in what Maltin calls 'the best part he's ever had'.

I remembered liking it when we first saw it; reminded by Kenneth Turan's useful book 'Never Coming to a Theater Near You'. It was well overdue, a marvellous film.

DP Virgil Murano, music Charles Engstrom.

Ruby In Paradise (1993) looks good also.
