Nowhere To Go (1958 Seth Holt & co-scr)

Had never even heard of this film until I chanced upon a Maltin review. It's quite a discovery, There's something quite European about it. Lots of 'pure cinema' - scenes with no dialogue right from the beginning with a man helping another man to break out of jail. Hadn't heard of George Nader, either, who didn't have a very distinctive career but is fine in the lead role, and don't think we'd seen Maggie Smith this young before. It's also one of Bernard Lee's most distinctive roles.

Good photography from Paul Beeson, operated by Chic Waterson, with an unusual jazz incidental score. Classy on location shooting. I mean it's almost an early Melville. Actually released by MGM but an Ealing Studios production.
