42nd Street (1933 Lloyd Bacon)

The one that started it all is all legs, legs, legs. Darryl Zanuck as head of production at Warners had the sense to recognise Busby Berkely's talent and to sign him to a seven year contract. Film is much plottier than you'd expect with the big stuff saved for the finale. In fact it's not as much fun or as impressive as the follow-up Gold Diggers of 1933.

Lovely photography by Sol Polito, songs include title number and 'Shuffle Off to Buffalo'. Warner Baxter is the harassed producer. With Bebe Daniels, George Brent, Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell, plus Guy Kibbee, Una Merkel, Ginger Rogers, Ned Sparks, Allen Jenkins.
