Judy (2019 Rupert Goold)

At the beginning, I was watching Renee Zellweger, by the end it was Judy Garland, in BAFTA (and probably by this time tomorrow, Oscar) winning performance, aided and abetted by Jeremy Woodhead's makeup and Jany Temime's costumes (both also BAFTA winners).

Tom Edge's adaptation of Peter Quilter's play finds us in London for one last tour in the sixties - she has to leave her kids at home, marries disastrously, falls over but still manages to belt out some great songs, whilst we revisit her drug-fuelled youth under the heavy tutelage of Louis B Mayer (an unrecognisable Richard Cordery). With Jessie Buckley, Finn Witrock, Rufus Sewell, Michael Gambon, Royce Pierrson (band leader), Darci Shaw (young Judy) and Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories) and Daniel Cerqueira as the fans (the sweetest scene).

Good music by Gabriel Yared, photography from Ole Bratt Birkeland and editing from Melanie Oliver (Pride, Anna Karenina).

Also sang all the numbers
