Produced by Clint and Steven Spielberg (so it's an Amblin-Malpaso co-production), written by William Broyles Jr and Paul Haggis, based on a book by James Bradley about his father, one of the flag raisers. It intercuts current day to the Battle of Iwo Jima and the tour of the surviving three to raise money for the war. I remember Clint saying that the battle was underknown and deserved to be better known.
The photographs with the credits show how accurately it had all been portrayed. It sounds however like the military action was not really that useful.
The three survivors are Ryan Philippe, Jesse Bradford and Adam Beach, playing the American Indian who was mistreated and ultimately died alone and neglected. This mistreatment of ethnic minorities also fits right into Clint's sensibilities, as it was to teach history lessons.
It's photography is notably desaturated and moody - more great work from Tom Stern. And the little but effective music is by the director. It's a well made film, obviously necessitating some rather good CGI. Joel Cox edited. The Oscar nominations went to sound mixing and sound editing Alan Murray.
