A splendid writer-director debut, winning Oscar and BAFTA for Kieran Culkin's wonderful performance and BAFTA for the seriously good screenplay. The film is deeper than you might think, with its roots in the Holocaust. Jesse's great-Aunt survived the camps and would tell him tales of survival.
It's also quite funny. Jesse and cousin Culkin join a Polish memorial tour headed by Will Sharpe. Kieran somehow over-relates to everyone and everything, including Dirty Dancing's Jennifer Grey,
It was shot on location with a Polish crew. DP Michal Dymek.
Jess has worked with some very interesting directors including Woody Allen, Greg Mottola, NOah Baumbach and Richard Ayowade and has clearly learned a lot. The use of Chopin throughout is inspired. A Real Gem.
