Robby Coltrane died unexpectedly on Friday, aged 72. He will be fondly remembered as Hagrid, of course, but it was in this that he really made his mark (and received three consecutive BAFTAs). I read in one of the obits that at one time he was a bottle of whisky a day man - Fitz is a gambling addict who also likes a drink.
From an idea by producer Gub Neal, written by Jimmy McGovern, whose characters are riven with conflict throughout, making it a dark voyage. (He calls the Chris Ecclestone character 'Bilborough', perhaps as a reference to his Hillsborough obsession, which rears its head in a later episode.)
Features the great Geraldine Somerville, Lorcan Cranitch, a young Adrian Dunbar, Ian Mercer, Paul Copley, Barbara Flynn, Kika Markham, John Grillo (The Darling Buds of May), Sunetra Sarker (briefly).
Well edited by Trevor Waite, photographed by Ivan Strasburg. The one where 'Summertime' runs throughout in ironic and unflinching style.
Why it's called 'The Mad Woman in the Attic', I've no idea. Probably wasn't paying attention.
