Dodsworth (1936 William Wyler)

I think I've said before that it's my favourite Mary Astor film - partly because her character is so lovely, but also - you have to suggest - that it's a William Wyler film, and he just got the best out of everybody. (I can't help feeling that Walter Huston didn't need much in the way of direction.)

Maltin says it's 'An unusually mature Hollywood film, not be be missed'.

Ruth Chatterton also good as spoiled wife. With David Niven, Paul Lukas, Gregory Gaye, Maria Ouspenskaya, Spring Byington and Harlan Briggs (good value as their old friends).

Niven good, too, as cad

Photographed by Rudolph Maté, edited by Daniel Mandell, music by Tom's dad Alfred Newman. A Sam Goldwyn picture.
