So the tabloids called him, but of course anyone is free to leave a care home - it's just a good idea to tell them where you're going. William Ivory's screenplay has happily married Michael Caine wander off to the D-Day beach memorial leaving wobbly Glenda Jackson (died 15 June, 87) to cope in the home, where she becomes involved with nurse Danielle Vitalis. Caine befriends former soldier John Standing and amputee Victor Oshin. Sub-story involving latter is poorly underwritten and clunky, as are scenes with nurse. In flashback: Laura Marcus and Will Fletcher. Reunion with Germans works.
It's supposedly Caine's last film but he's said that before - he's predictably assured. Jackson feels like her performance is cut quite a bit (Paul Tothill is the editor). Most of it was shot in England by Christopher Ross.
