David Copperfield (1935 George Cukor)

It was Selznick's idea to film his own favourite 'David Copperfield'. It was a huge hit both here and in the US. Personally I find both Copperfields Freddie Bartholemew & Frank Lawton quite hard to take but large cast is good: Edna May Oliver (aunt), W.C. Fields (Micawber), Lionel Barrymore, Maureen O'Sullivan, Roland Young, Elizabeth Allan (David's mum), Basil Rathbone, Herbert Mundin, Una O'Connor, Elsa Lanchester, Lennox Pawle (Mr. Dick).

Elizabeth Allan
British Dickens expert High Walpole helped with the adaptation, which Howard Estabrook wrote. Oliver T. Marsh shot it. Though credited, Vorkapich's daydream scene of David and Dora didn't make the final cut.

It's success in GB encouraged Selznick to open MGM British a couple of years later.

Most intrigued to learn that Armando Ianucci has just begun filming The Personal History of David Copperfield, with Dev Patel.
