A filmed play by Samuel D Hunter. Spent much of the film not enjoying it, like most Aronofsky stuff, whose films seem to me largely about pain and suffering. A quite shaded film, with corpulent Brendan Fraser feeling responsible for death of lover, trying to build relationship with deserted and angry daughter Sadie Sink. Fraser's friend / carer Hong Chau it seems is the lover's sister. With Ty Simpkins and Samantha Morton. Nicely worked out stuff with Whale / Melville / girl.
So darkly photographed (by Matthew Libatique in 4x3) that it's quite annoying. OK, I get the light at the end - but again isn't that also quite theatrical? Music by Rob Simonsen.
