Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022 Simon Curtis)

Julian Fellowes' dialogue is as bad as it's become, but we enjoyed this nonsense more than  the last one. Essentially it's two stories. Maggie Smith has been left a French villa from a former lover and Bonneville thinks he's the illegitimate son of a Frenchman for a bit. And there's a kinematograph or whatever bollocks they're calling it being filmed at the house back in Blighty. Wah hoo!

With Harry Haddon-Paton as the director, Laura Haddock and Dominic West as the actors, Nathalie Baye the french grande dame. Best (though unlikely) bit: maid Sophie McShera telling the actress to pull herself together. And Kevin Doyle emerging as a 'play writer for films'.

Photographed by Andrew Dunn (The United States vs. Billie Holliday, Precious, Crazy Stupid Love, The Lady in the Van) should anyone be wondering what he's been up to.

Alex Macqueen is the sound recordist.
