The Shopworn Angel (1938 H.C. Potter)

Texas farmer James Stewart is blown away by Broadway performer Margaret Sullavan on his way to leave for WWI. They begin to associate, forcing Sullavan to admit she's in love with her manager Walter Pidgeon, and he with her. Thus a merry triangle - which Stewart is unaware of - forms, and makes it a more complicated relationship drama than most of the time. Dana Burnet's 'Private Pettigrew's Girl' was adapted by Waldo Salt.

Stewart and Sullavan were first put together in the 1936 Next Time We Live. Then came this, The Shop Around the Corner and The Mortal Storm (both 1940).

Vorkapitch's montages are exceptional, Ruttenberg's photography as shaded as usual. Joe Mankiewicz produced for MGM.

With Sam Levine, Nat Pendleton, Hattie McDaniel, Alan Curtis.
