I'm sure this stinging, tragic tale is all in E.M. Forster's novel (which I would have studied at school had I not left unexpectedly), but there's no denying that Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's screenplay has a wonderful momentum, enormously aided by Richard Robbins' brilliant, propulsive score. It's undoubtedly the finest of the Merchant-Ivory-Jhabvala collaborations. Fine photography and editing too, by Tony Pierce-Roberts and Andrew Marcus.
Emma Thompson and the film won BAFTAs but though everything else was nominated, they were thwarted by unexpected others. Marvellous performances: Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, Samuel West, Prunella Scales, James Wilby, Jemma Redgrave, Nicola Duffet, Peter Cellier, and Siegbert Prawer, Ruth's brother, as 'man asking a question'.
The associate editor, James Marsh, is indeed the same one who went on to direct The Theory of Everything and King of Thieves.
Loved the moments where the sunlight comes and goes.
