Mayflies (2022 Peter Mackie Burns)

Based on novel by Andrew O'Hagan about friends in the 1980s and how they face up to impending death in the modern day. Adapted by Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth Is Missing) for a 2 x 1 hour series. To me, there's no ethical dilemma here - if someone has a terminal illness and they going to get iller and iller, then they have the perfect right to end it all and their partners should support that decision.

The rest of the story is a flashback to a memorable night in Manchester in the 80s, often shown in stills, where one of the gang tragically dies.

With Martin Compston and Tony Curran (real life friends), and Rian Gordon and Tom Glynn-Carney as their younger selves. Plus Ashley Jensen, Tracy Ifeachor (Showtrial). Synchronicity for BBC.

In answer to 'Best three smoking scenes in films' I came up with In the Mood for Love and Now Voyager and then couldn't think of any more.
