Downsizing (2017 Alexander Payne & co-scr)

Payne's Swiftian view of the world's problems is a radical leap into a new world. I have to say I was initially overwhelmed with thoughts about miniature clothing, TV cameras, champagne etc. but you have to let that all go and enjoy a story about a man who chooses a new life (emigrates?) which looks better than the old, only to find it's the same, and rejects an even more drastic life choice in favour of love. Great acting from Matt Damon, Hong Chau (Treme, Big Little Lies, Inherent Vice), Cristoph Waltz, Udo Keir and Kristen Wiig.

Love the monologue on the eight types of fuck.

Written with Jim Taylor who also wrote early Payne-Laura Dern film Citizen Ruth (can't believe Payne's feature debut had passed us by - she has a cameo in this), and with the rest of the usual crew Papamichael (in Panavision), Tent and Kent.

"Nature - what a patient sculptor."
