Where's Poppa? (1970 Carl Reiner)

Cheerful but black comedy, littered with newly allowed bad language and potentially offensive material manages to be a lot of madcap fun - Reiner - I kept thinking to myself - did, after all, make The Man With Two Brains.

Segal good as weary son, Ruth Gordon great as eccentric mother, Trish Van Devere is the girl he's fallen for, Ron Leibman the brother.

Robert Klane adapted his own novel. You get the flavour right from the off - Segal trying to frighten his mother to death with a gorilla suit - and it's reinforced in a courtroom scene where the disgusting Colonel (Barnard Hughes) talks about all the gooks he's slaughtered - but then it turns out the young man being accused (Rob Reiner) isn't as innocent as he looks - he has cut off the old man's toe...
