About Schmidt (2002 Alexander Payne & co-scr)

Jack Nicholson ends up relating his feelings to the audience through his letters to sponsored African kid, who ultimately is the only one who triggers him into emotion. Well observed film from always interesting writer-director. The Holdovers, with Paul Giamatti, is out early next year.

Hope Davis is good as his daughter. With Kathy Bates, Dermot Mulroney, a young-looking June Squibb, some other people.

Those figurines he buys are as detestable as anything his late wife invested in, and my favourite moment remains when they fall off the roof off his excessive motor home.

Cheesy, tacky side of America well caught

Director promoting own film... and why not?
