A rather long thriller that is really more of a relationship drama. Construction worker Matt Damon travels to Marseilles where his daughter Abigail Breslin has been in prison for five years for murder. He tries to track down the person he thinks really responsible, along the way befriending Camille Cottin and her young daughter Lilou Siauvaud. Parallel drawn between daughter he couldn't really parent and new young girl he looks after is tangy.
It goes in ways you don't expect. Worst moment is at a football match when Damon spots the culprit but has the young girl with him - most tense. Hollywood ending noticeably absent in McCarthy / Marcus Hinchey / Thomas Bidegain / Noé Debré script.
Tom McCarthy is best known for Spotlight (2015) but also made The Station Agent (2003), The Visitor (2007), and Win Win (2011).
DP Masanobu Takayanagi.
