Robert Harling has opened up his own play to write about a group of Louisiana women friends over time. They are salt of the earth Dolly Parton, young bride-to-be Julia Roberts, her understandably controlling mother Sally Field, town dragon-lady Shirley MacLaine and understanding older Olympia Dukakis.
The men are effectively redundant, secondary characters. Quite right. What's the line in hospital 'I thought men were supposed to be made of steel.' They can't handle the real shit - that's why the women are stronger - the 'steel magnolias' of the title.
Oh yeah, I forget mousy Darryl Hannah who finds God.
What can I say? It's a good character study, well acted. John Alonzo shot it, it's well put together by Paul Hirsch.
