William Goldman script is nicely tricky and convention-defying, e.g. great scene where Mel Gibson is surrounded by Indians, the leader of which turns out to be his sarcastic buddy (played by Graham Greene). Also loved in-joke where he's held up by Danny Glover and they think they recognise each other.
James Garner, Jodie Foster, Alfred Molina, James Coburn, Dan Hedaya (extremely fleetingly). Good production design in town and river-boat glamorously and softly filmed by Vilmos Zsigmond in Panavision.
