Written by Private Eye partners Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, telling the true story of the officers who published a funny and subversive paper in the trenches in WW1, played by Ben Chaplin and Julian Rhind-Tutt. We don't get the emotional side of the situation, but it doesn't set out to do that. Instead we see the absurdity of this conflict and the correspondingly anarchic and sarcastic wit in response to it.
I'd say it was pretty successful.
Michael Palin is sadly in a mainly deskbound role, Ben Daniels is the objecting officer who tells them they must be 'more offensive', Steve Oram is the ex-printer and Amelia Fox appears fleetingly.
