Also from an Elmore Leonard novel and adapted by Scott Frank, this is effectively a precursor to Out of Sight, with a similar hip score (John Lurie) and photography (Don Peterman). Very funny on Hollywood vs gangsters who feel 'anyone can be a writer / producer' etc. John Travolta is the film's strong core. With Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, Dennis Farina, Danny de Vito, Delroy Lindo (we've just seen him in The Good Fight), James Gandolfini, Renee Props, David Paymer. Really good fun.
You could strike a case for this being a descendant of Bullets Over Broadway also. Well, actually, as the book was published in 1990, you can't.
