They All Laughed (1981 Peter Bogdanovich)

An absolute joy from beginning to end, a classic film fan's film.

There's a scene - a long take, naturally - of Hepburn and Gazzara in bed together that is so natural - she's just fantastic. It's her last great role. There's a beautiful little montage in the end credits as Gazzara remembers all his encounters with her.

The editing's credited to William Carruth and Scott Vickrey, but we all know what that means... 'Film editor' credited as Robert Barrère. It's a quite brilliant piece of editing. Let's give it a NickOscar. Let's shower the film with NickOscars in every category.

I read after that Peter doesn't like making up his actors. In this, Dorothy wears NO makeup.

In 1988, Peter was asked if directing came easier to him with time. "Well, sure. The more pictures you make, the easier the technique comes to you. I couldn't have made Mask or They All Laughed when I started. Those are very complicated pictures."
