Amsterdam (2022 David O Russell & scr)

Well, we thoroughly enjoyed Amsterdam. It has a sort of hip film noir quality, like the Coen Brothers would have given it, but its themes of physical reconstruction and war veterans and corruption from the top couldn't be more timely. It's set in 1933, but could have been any age.

Christian Bale, John David Washington (BlackKklansman) and Margot Robbie make a kooky and lovable trio. An eclectic cast includes Chris Rock, Anya Taylor Joy, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Taylor Swift, Matthias Schoenarts, Robert de Niro, Ed Begley Jr., Colleen Camp, Alessandro Nivola.

Possibly we need less vaudeville acts at the end which slows down the climax; similarly is there a shade too much voiceover stuff at the finale?

I could see there was something really interesting going on with the camerawork - it seemed really atmospheric, smooth but fluid, in an ochre palette. It was only Chivo! Also great editing from Jay Cassidy, production design Judy Becker, music Daniel Pemberton, makeup and sound.

Loved some of her Dadaist Amsterdam art. And the war camaraderie. And de Niro's speech.
