True Grit (2010 Joel & Ethan Coen & scr)

Fabulous Coen interpretation of Charles Portis novel, who provides the flavour of the great dialogue, especially from the girl, the feisty young Hailee Steinfeld, with emphasis on humour. Jeff Bridges is her grizzled accomplice, Matt Damon also along for the ride. With Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, Domhnall Gleason, Elizabeth Marvel.

Absolutely stunning to look at (Roger Deakins). Music by Carter Burwell, sound design by Skip Livesay, edited by 'Roderick Jaynes'.

Hailee, who was about 12, was a very "assured" person who was perfectly professional, older than her years, and a great rider. They would not allow her to work past 10 pm though, so the scene at the shack took five or six nights, and was one of the exteriors when Roger did have to light it - a row of lights from the hill give it that moonlight quality.

One of the great things about it is the complete lack of sentimentality.
