Lethal Weapon (1987 Richard Donner)

It is a Christmas film - it has twinkly Christmas lights all the way through it, and Scrooge is on TV.

Shane Black's original draft was much darker and featured flashbacks of both Riggs and Murtagh (and Joshua) in Vietnam. Jeffrey Boam was an uncredited writer who added humour - Donner also had some of the darker material toned down. Boam wrote The Lost Boys which is playing at a cinema in the background.

Dedicated to Dar Robinson, who orchestrated Jackie Swanson's celebrated high rise dive.

Mel Gibson is terrific in his best role. I'd like to see the original opening, available on the Lethal Weapon 4 DVD.

Great collaboration of Kamen / Clapton (David Sandborn on sax), Goldblatt and Baird.
