New York Stories (1989)

Interestingly the Scorsese episode 'Life Lessons', written by Richard Price, usually gets good reviews, but despite some fantastic montages and editing (Thelma of course), we found it a bit dull and his paintings are unexceptional. Nick Nolte is the artist, Rosanna Arquette his muse.

Coppola's episode (co-written with Sophia) - which is usually written off - is quite engaging, and gloriously photographed by Vittorio Storaro (no idea why our DVD is in 4x3). Heather McComb, Talia Shire, Giancarlo Giannini.

Meanwhile, Woody Allen's mother-in-the-sky Mae Questel won't leave him alone until he's traded Mia Farrow for the more suitable Julie Kavner.

Shot by Sven Nykvist.
