Ruthless People (1986 Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker)

Well, I did not know that the seed of this is O. Henry's 'The Ransom of Red Chief' which was filmed before in O Henry's Full House, though for us the best part is that Bette Midler loses a ton of weight and is delighted by her captors (Judge Reinhold and the spectacularly untalented Helen Slater). Anita Morris though is fine as the other woman (her other half, Bill Pullman, is terrible too).

I don't recall seeing de Vito in a serious role but I think he'd be good.
