Fabulous Universal comedy-western, with pacifist James Stewart brought in by town drunk Charles Winninger to tame the town and crime lord Brian Donlevy, tangling with Marlene Dietrich. Filmed in long takes, even that spectacular fight between Dietrich and Una Merkel. Dietrich really puts her all into this - she looks like she's having fun in her musical numbers - it revived her flagging career. She and Stewart had an affair during the filming. Max Brand novel, screenplay by Felix Jackson, Gertrude Purcell, Henry Myers.
Q wished it known there's an early appearance from Bryan Cranston (standing)... |

Beautifully photographed by Hal Mohr, for Universal.
With Mischa Auer (losing his trousers), Allen Jenkins, Warren Hymer, Jack Carson, Samuel S. Hinds (mayor).
