My First Mister (2001 Christine Lahti)

Good Wilder, it had been a long time, another one that had been neglected for too long. Pierced, eulogy-writing teenager Leelee Sobieski starts working in posh clothes store run by Albert Brooks - they soon warm to each other; we learn a little about him along the way. Loved the pivotal moment in Brooks' garden where he suddenly confesses his fears and she comforts him - the switch. A great performance from the young lady - she had been in Eyes Wide Shut before this, and for some reason her performance here didn't propel her to greater things.

With Carol Kane, John Goodman, Michael McKean, Desmond Harrington (son), Mary Kay Place, Henry Brown. Written by Jill Franklyn, Jeffrey Jur photographed, Wendy Greene Bricmont edited with lots of dissolves all over the place.

The music and CGI paper plane at the end are over the top but overall this is a very tender and funny and satisfying film.

Lahti was in Running on Empty, and more recently A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. This was her only feature.
