The Clouds of Sils Maria (2014 Olivier Assayas & scr)

A more interesting film than first appears. Switzerland. Actress Juliette Binoche is attending an award ceremony for a famous playwright with her PA Kristen Stewart. The writer dies, and she agrees to appear in his play which gave her her break aged 18, this time playing the role of the older woman who becomes her lover. She begins to regret this decision, and as she runs through the scenes with her assistant, you start to wonder whether the film / play is somehow about their own (work) relationship / dynamic. She is not impressed by the younger actress she'll be working with either, played by Chloe Grace Moretz, but agrees to go through with it.

The scene where they go to view the clouds (The Snake of Maloha which gives the play its title) and Stewart just vanishes is striking indeed, and you start to wonder if she was ever even there.

The acting is great of course - we watched it only because Sally Hawkins in an interview was rating Kristen Stewart. Also appearing: Lars Eidinger, Johnny Flynn, Angela Winkler. DP Yorick Le Saux, editor Marion Monnier.
