A Good Person (2023 Zach Braff & scr)

"So I had a beer with him at breakfast... and I never stopped."

Possibly Zach Braff's most personal, serious and focused film has Florence Pugh (who's reliably wonderful) the survivor of a car crash that killed her sister-in-law to be; Morgan Freeman is left looking after the surviving daughter, Celeste O'Connor. And you know the two girls are going to get together, somehow, just not what will happen. And Pugh's oxy addiction is well caught.

Freeman with gun on creep at party, saved by son, is maybe a shade into melodrama, but overall it has a very steady hand.

Model railway as metaphor for life works, as does encounter in bar between penniless, desperate Pugh and former college jerks she looked down on. Emotional, good film.

With Molly Shannon, Chinaza Uche, Zoe Lister-Jones, Nichelle Hines. Photographed by Mauro Fiore (fairly uninteresting credits since Oscar for Avatar), editor Dan Schalk, music Bryce Dessner, production design Merissa Lombardo.

Must watch Pugh in The Wonder, with Niamh Algar.
