I would not have been able to name Edmond O'Brien, even though he was of course familiar from The Barefoot Contessa, DOA, The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance, The Wild Bunch, Birdman of Alcatraz, The Girl Can't Help It, The Hitch-Hiker (1953, also Ida Lupino directing), White Heat, The Killers. Strangely he's only fourth billed despite having most of the screen time, which otherwise is split between first wife Joan Fontaine, second wife Ida Lupino and investigator Edmund Gwenn (Miracle of 42nd Street an in-joke reference to Gwenn).
Has a rather fluffed ending, I think, but reasonably watchable. An independent 'The Filmakers' production, one of their cheap and cheerful fifties B movies (which included The Hitch-Hiker), shot (a bit) in LA (the establishing shots of San Francisco are the only genuine SF locations) by George Diskant.
The copy we saw on TPTV had a rather amusing number of scratches and drop outs, reminding me of Death Proof.
Cute bus, which IMCDB informs me is a 1943 Aerocoach P33 |
