Hi Mom! (1969, released 1970 Brain de Palma)

Quite amusing seemingly improvised cultural satire, with young Robert de Niro first attempting to make a peep show film (shades of Rear Window from Hitch obsessive de Palma), falling for his voyeur subject, and becoming involved in a 'black experience' happening, which with its improvisation and black and white hand held sequences is actually quite frightening. Set in NYC (the Village) - filmed by Robert Elfstrom. Quite visually inventive - edited by what was to become a regular collaborator Paul Hirsch.

With Jennifer Salt, Paul Bartel, Allen Garfield.

Story by de Palma and producer Charles Hirsch.

Favourite moment - de Niro improvising role as cop and interrogating a step ladder and a mop:
