Based on John Brophy's novel and adapted by he and producer Paul Soskin. Outrageously overacting sailor Robert Newton deserts wife Kathleen Harrison and children for the sea. Grown up, the eldest daughter Avis Scott is romanced by a ship's engineer, a young and barely recognisable Richard Burton (not quite his debut). And younger daughter Susan Shaw has dalliance with bounder Hugh Griffith, who just wants to get her into bed. Liverpool dockside and 1930s depression provide the atmosphere, photographed by Harry Waxman. James Hayter is the ship's captain, and that music hall singer was actually Hattie Jacques. (I wonder why there wasn't a Carry on Sailor - oh, I suppose there was - Carry on Jack.)
