Sort of a true story, based a bit on the life of writer Duncan Patrick Sheane. In fact his father was killed in a bar fight and his mother moved her twelve children to Michigan where she worked as a fruit picker. The writer went to University, and the Vietnam War, and ended up working as Roger Corman's accountant, before beginning to write and direct screenplays of varying quality, including the Richard Dreyfuss film Mr Holland's Opus, and the Meg Ryan / Denzel Washington film Courage Under Fire.
Meanwhile, back in Idaho, Kathy Bates decides to renovate the shell of a house, under the benevolent watch of its owner, neighbour Soon-Tek Oh. Primary conflict is with her eldest son Edward Furlong, who was in Terminator 2, as well as slightly less glamorous fare, such as the 2.8 IMDB rated Arachnoquake, which sounds like it should be a later Roger Corman effort, but isn't.
They're terminally poor, won't accept charity, the kids squabble all the time, Bates thinks she's found romance but hasn't, it's cold, people get on with it, and grow up a bit.
Something of a sleeper. Low budget film has no names behind camera I knew - not true, composer Michael Convertino did Milk Money, Guarding Tess, Queen of Hearts...and actually DP Jean Lépine shot both The Player and Vincent and Theo for Robert Altman.
