Road House (1948 Jean Negulesco)

A romantic quadrangle. Road house owner Richard Widmark employs haughty singer Ida Lupino as 'the new equipment', hoping to get with her, but she falls for his friend and manager, Cornel Wilde, who himself is the object of affection of employee Celeste Holm. Widmark frames his old pal, and then descends into his giggling psycho role as we wonder who will survive.

It would never have worked. Widmark's character is called 'Jefty', so that's not a good start, and he tries to impress the girl - get this - by bringing her breakfast in bed at seven o'clock on a Sunday Morning... a singer?? Fuck off!

Photographed by Joseph LaShelle at 20th Century Fox.

Louis 'Baci' Bacigalupi is the infrequently appearing uncredited actor who plays 'burly drunk' in that memorable scene.
