This Happy Breed (1944 David Lean)

So, further to earlier posts, Singapore has already fallen (in 1942) by this time when Queenie and Billy go out there in 1939 - a subtle touch.

The opening narration sounds like it's Laurence Olivier.

As to the wallpaper, and the debate about whether they redecorated:


See? Also, I think I can be forgiven for saying that Guy Greene is a smooth operator.

I think Lean was right to prohibit Newton from drinking as his performance is reined in and not hammy like he can be.

Also in that brilliant scene, see here, the announcement of the death to the parents, I hadn't noticed before but under the lively music, you can also hear kids playing in the gardens, another lovely touch...

It absolutely nails a / the family dynamic.
