Ghost World (2001 Terry Zwigoff)

Daniel Clowes adapted his own comic book (apart from the superheroes, one of the first such adaptations?) with Zwigoff.  Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson are good as anti-social elitists with a cruel streak, who get involved with lonely music aficionado Steve Buscemi.

The significance of the bus which shouldn't be there leaves the film very open-ended - Q thinks the Birch character has killed herself, but she also has had the fantasy of running away...

Illustrated by Sophie Crumb - yes, daughter of.

Illeanna Douglas. There really was a Coon's Chicken
It's isn't outrageously funny but quite meaty and interesting.

With Bob Balaban, Brad Renfro. Photographed by Affonso Beato, then colour timed to make everything slightly more colourful than it would have been. Another interesting tidbit is that there are very few extras, giving the scenes an empty, depopulated 'ghost' feeling.
