Only You (1994 Norman Jewison)

Marisa Tomei (Bridget Fonda was apparently first choice) is annoyingly hung up on a destiny with someone (anyone) called Damon Bradley in Diane Drake's somewhat fanciful tale. Just before marrying podiatrist she hears of such a person in Italy and rushes there with sister-in-law Bonnie Hunt (rather good) who's experiencing marriage problems. 42 minutes in Robert Downey appears - this was only two years away from his arrest for possession of heroin, cocaine and a 357 magnum and ensuing years of troubles and relapses, but he seems fresh and competent.

Also mixed up are Joaquim de Almeida, Fisher Stevens and Billy Zane.

The film gets better as it goes along - I like the nuns who helpfully refill the gas tank and leave a Virgin Mary card under the wipers. The ending involving the real Damon Bradley and some helpful airport staff is touching.

The  Pensione Divino Amore was faked but the other places seen were the Hotel Danieli in Venice and the Hotel la Sirenuse in Positano.

The full quote from Aeschylus is "Things are where things are, and, as fate has willed, So shall they be fulfilled" but I'm not sure I care now.
