Engrenages / Spiral - Season 8 (2020)

A Moroccan youth is found dead up in the 18eme (Barbès), triggering a case for Laure, whilst Gilou is in jail, where he's attempting to become associated with criminal Cisco to get to the truth of murder. I think they were right to stay away from plots involving terrorism, though it's interesting that the police working in jails can't help Gilou because 'all they're interested in is radicalisation'.

Conflict absolutely abounds here. Looking as early as episode 4: Karlsson and Laure are in conflict over handling the Moroccan boy, the unit isn't getting cases because of Gilou, Laure's No. 2 has been offered a different job, can't tell anyone, Gilou's trying to infiltrate Cisco, hates being an 'informer', Cisco's suspicious of him, if Gilou doesn't succeed he could lose his badge; Gilou can't see Laure so breaks it off with her, she doesn't believe him; Karlsson lets down her flatmate by not helping her court case; the new judge is anti-Laure because of the Gilou thing; two of Laure's team are at odds...

Has a most exciting finale in which everyone's desperately trying to cover up Gilou (the sense of team spirit is very strong) but he needs to stay alive...

Caroline Proust, Thierry Godard, Audrey Fleurot, Tewfik Jallab (good as their No. 2), Louis Dode Lencquesaing (Edelman), Valentin Merlet, Bruno Debrandt, Kool Shen (Cisco), Clara Bonnet (Juge), Isabel Aimé Gonzalez Sola (lola), Ayoube Barboucha (Souleymane), Pierre Cevaer (rather good as coke-sniffing 'Titi').

Une series conçue par Alexandra Clert.

Une saison conçue par Marine Francou (who wrote or co-wrote every episode).

The next day I was lucky enough to speak to a French lady who was also a fan, who explained that 'balancé' is slang meaning 'betrayed', thus it comes into conversation concerning informants.
