Important supporting characters / actors: Kit (Laura San Giacomo), Mr. Thompson (Hector Elizondo), James Morse (Ralph Bellamy - spent the entire film trying - unsuccessfully - to remember his name - got as far as 'Robert') - and you have to have the pantomime villain Stuckey (Jason Alexander) - actually, not so pantomime - the moment he assaults her is quite nasty.
The now defunct Ambassador Hotel stood in for the Beverly Wilshire. According to IMDB, JF Lawton's original script (which started out as a darker drama - see this interesting Vanity Fair article) was contributed to by Robert Garland, Stephen Metcalfe, Barbara Benedek (The Big Chill, the Sabrina update) and Marshall himself (all uncredited).
