Produced by Hunt Stromberg, the Goodrich-Hackett script of Dashiell Hammett's detective story endeared the public to the first really successful husband-and-wife combo of Myrna Loy and William Powell (and Asta). It's actually quite a complex fable, but no one's really paying that much attention.
